Assistant Public Health Officer

Your differences make us different - #achievetogether

About the role

Are you passionate about improving people’s health and wellbeing? Are you ready to thrive in a fast-paced environment with new challenges every day? Are you looking for an opportunity where you can learn and put your new skills to use in a practical context? If so, then this could be the perfect opportunity for you.

We are looking to recruit an Assistant Public Health Officer to join North Northamptonshire’s forward-thinking and friendly Public Health team. The purpose of the role is to support and co-ordinate the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of Public Health programmes, projects and initiatives across North Northamptonshire. The postholder will provide project, administrative and stakeholder support to Public Health Practitioners, Officers and Commissioners to ensure services are delivered effectively, in accordance with public health guidance and best practice.

Alongside this role, the successful applicant must be willing and eligible to complete a Level 6 Public Health Practitioner Apprenticeship with Coventry University. This is a three-year BSc programme delivered through blended learning, combining academic study with workplace-based learning so that apprentices can apply their knowledge, skills and behaviours directly within public health practice. The programme is aligned to the Skills England Public Health Practitioner apprenticeship standard and the UK Public Health Register Practitioner Standards.

More information about the apprenticeship opportunity can be found here: Public Health Practitioner Apprenticeship | Coventry University Apprenticeships

The successful candidate will be required to work remotely, attend our offices in Kettering, and travel to Coventry University for apprenticeship training days. This is a full-time fixed-term opportunity on a 3-year basis.

The closing date for applications for this role is Sunday 11th October 2026. Interviews will be scheduled for week commencing Monday 19th October.

If you’d like to have an informal discussion about this opportunity, please contact Danny.Adams@northnorthants.gov.uk

As an Assistant Public Health Officer, you will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the implementation, monitoring and review of Public Health projects and programmes to ensure delivery of agreed objectives and outcomes
  • Collecting, maintaining and analysing project activity and performance data that enables reporting, monitoring and evidence-based decision making
  • Managing the organisation and delivery of meetings, workshops, training events and engagement activities, providing comprehensive coordination, governance support and action tracking to facilitate informed decision-making and successful delivery of priorities
  • Providing advice and information relating to Public Health initiatives and signpost stakeholders and members of the public to appropriate services, resources and guidance
  • Producing reports, presentations, briefings, promotional materials and project documentation using Microsoft 365 applications
  • Supporting procurement, contract monitoring, finance administration and record keeping activities associated with Public Health programmes

About you

Applicants should hold A-Level or Level 3 equivalent qualifications (or equivalent work-based experience) and have experience with office-based administrative tasks such as co-ordinating and supporting meetings and engagement events, both online and in-person. Critically, applicants must be willing and eligible to undergo further study in the form of a Level 6-degree apprenticeship with the University of Coventry and be able to begin training with Coventry in time from January 2027. As an apprenticeship opportunity, eligibility will be assessed in line with apprenticeship funding rules, including consideration of any existing degree-level qualifications and their relevance to the apprenticeship.

The ideal candidate will have an interest in public health and some understanding of key public health concepts, partnership working and the role of local authorities, the NHS and voluntary and community sector organisations in improving health and wellbeing. Knowledge of project planning and implementation would be beneficial. You will be confident using Microsoft 365 applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams, to support accurate recording, monitoring and reporting. Strong written and verbal communication skills, good presentation skills and the ability to build positive working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders will be important. You will also be well organised, able to manage your workload, prioritise tasks and use your own initiative to meet objectives.

The successful applicant will be able to analyse, interpret and present information clearly to support effective decision-making and help improve the accessibility, quality and impact of public health services. Strong attention to detail, critical thinking and a flexible approach will be important in responding to changing priorities and supporting the wider needs of the team.
