As a Council Tax Officer, you will play a key part in securing vital income for the authority. Your role will involve the effective administration, billing, and recovery of Council Tax in line with current legislation. You’ll be providing accurate information, resolving queries, and ensuring accounts are managed efficiently.
What will you be doing?
The purpose of the role is to carry out the administrative tasks involved in the revenues process, this will involve responding to customer queries and supporting through the stages of the process.
Duties will include:
- Administer council tax accounts in accordance with current legislation, policy and best practices
- Monitor accounts, process changes of circumstances, make payment arrangements and process
- Update and maintain accounts to ensure recovery processes are followed
- Respond to customer queries, telephone, face to face and in writing
- Review accounts, suggesting appropriate recovery action as well as preparing accounts for enforcement agents
- Producing letters and reports
- Setting up direct debit, dealing with recalled direct debits
- Check and Issue Summons
- Check and action refunds
- Identify and set up attachment of earnings
- Manage diary and tracing codes on the system
- Identifying appropriate accounts for write off, bankruptcies and arrangements
- Promote good relationships with internal and external parties
- Assist with the billing and recovery of NNDR as required
- Demonstrate awareness of equal opportunities
- Comply with the councils policies and procedures
- Understand the councils commitment to corporate parenting
About you
For this role you will need:
- English and Maths GCSE Grade C or above or equivalent
- Experience in administration and processing of council tax (Billing and Recovery)
- Must be computer literate
- Good attention to detail
- Ability to work to deadlines and targets
- Demonstrate ability to understand, interpret and explain complicated legislation and ability to keep up to date with frequent legislation and procedural changes
- Good verbal and written communications skills
- Fluent English
- Ability to support and negotiate, customers, landlords and stakeholders in a calm, sensitive way in difficult situations
- Proven ability to work on own initiative with minimum supervision
- Able to use own discretion and judgement
- Ability to demonstrate awareness/ understanding of equal opportunities and ither peoples’ behaviours, physical, social and welfare needs.
