Please Note: The application deadline for this job has now passed.

About the role

North Northamptonshire Council is an ambitious, exciting, innovative and supportive place to work. The Council is committed to focused service delivery to improve the lives of our residents. Following local government reform, we are well on our way into our transformation journey to deliver excellent services in an inclusive and creative environment where ideas are encouraged alongside a commitment to staff development.

We created our own in-house Internal Audit service in 2022. We are now looking to grow our Internal Audit team further and are keen to hear from potential Principal Auditors who have a passion for working in the public sector and enjoy the challenge of a varied workload. Principal Auditors play a vital role in the delivery of our audit plan and will be relied upon for leading, planning and driving audit work across varying risk areas.  This is an opportunity to contribute to the overall management and development of the Internal Audit team and assist the Chief Internal Auditor in shaping the overall direction of the service for the future.

We are committed to your personal development and the variety of work delivers an exciting range of assignments for the team.  As a unitary authority, the opportunities are varied and broad with the potential to shape processes and grow with the Council as it develops.

As a team, we also deliver a highly respected internal audit service to a range of other local authorities across Leicestershire, Rutland and Cambridgeshire, giving our auditors exposure to different organisations, risk areas and types of audit work.  This provides a great place to build your audit experience across a diverse range of assignments, further develop areas of specialism and gain valuable insights into how we can support different organisations in tackling their current challenges and risks.

Our current working arrangements rely on remote and flexible working, which enables us to be responsive to our customers and be available to attend Council sites as needed.

We would also be willing to consider applications for part-time or term-time working.

What will you be doing?

The successful applicant will be required to plan and deliver audits which will provide assurance over the adequacy and effectiveness of the Council’s internal controls. Audits assigned to this role will be complex and relate to higher risk areas.  Principal Auditors also lead and co-ordinate large audit assignments, gaining valuable management experience.

At a Principal Auditor level we would be looking for you to bring the benefits of continuing professional development and areas of specialism to the team.

The role will have a high level of responsibility in the provision and development of a proactive and dynamic Internal Audit service. The Principal Auditor should provide clients with independent assurance that their service is being delivered in line with statutory requirements, risks are identified and effectively managed, control systems are appropriate and value for money is achieved in line with the Council’s objectives.

About you

You should have experience in audit planning and delivery, preferably within the public sector, with an up-to-date working knowledge of all relevant and appropriate legislation, standards and codes relating to Internal Audit. You should benefit from an understanding of how Internal Audit should operate in a large, complex and diverse environment and be able to work effectively as a member of the team to deliver all agreed work programmes and achieve solid performance across challenging workloads.

Our benefits

We offer:

  • a competitive salary
  • a pension scheme, where we pay a significant contribution on top of your contribution. It provides life cover and ill-health protection.
  • opportunities to develop your skills, knowledge and potential in a large unitary council
  • generous leave entitlement (28 days, rising to 33 days) and bank holidays, plus the option to buy up to an extra 10 days
