About the role

The Registration Service has the statutory duty to register all life events that happened in the district (births and deaths) and to conduct and register all civil marriages and civil partnerships that occur in the county. It also offers many other services such as Nationality Checking Service, Citizenship ceremonies, copy certificate production, and celebratory ceremonies such as Naming or Renewal of Vows.

The service is currently seeking a zero-hours Registrar of Births and Deaths/Deputy Superintendent Registrar to join our team. You will be working from any of our offices based in Kettering, Wellingborough and Corby.

The service operates from a variety of council buildings and conducts ceremonies at numerous approved venues throughout the district.

What will you be doing?

After completing the required training your main duties will include:
• interviewing relatives following a birth or death
• interviewing people who are planning a civil ceremony
• completing computerised and paper records
• issuing birth or death certificates and taking payment for these
• keeping accurate records
• performing civil ceremonies
• any other tasks within the job remit

This post will act on behalf of the statutory post-holders of “Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages” and “Superintendent Registrar”, and therefore you will be required to comply with the requirements of the Disqualification to Registration Office criteria, and as a user of government-provided software, you must pass a DBS Basic Check for Baseline Personnel Security Standards.

About you

You must be:

  • Educated to GCSE pass standard of general education in Maths and English or equivalent
  • Able to comprehend and apply detailed regulations
  • Able to write clearly and accurately
  • Experience in completing detailed forms/accounts
  • Confident in working with computerised systems
  • Able to deal tactfully and discreetly with the public, particularly in emotional circumstances
  • Able to work flexibly as part of a team
  • Able to work unsupervised
  • Able to work when required, including weekends and occasional Bank holidays
  • Experienced in making correct decisions while working under pressure

Able to demonstrate awareness/understanding of equal opportunities and other people’s behaviour, physical, social and welfare needs
